General notes
The foundations of Whalley Abbey was[sic] laid on the 12th of June 1308 by Henry de Lacy, Early of Lincoln, great progress was made from 1313 to 1323. In 1339 or 1340 battlemented walls were permitted by King Edward III. A rich place like the Abbey were[sic] to[sic] tempting a prize to be left unprotected, Raids were a frequent occurrence by the Scots army.
