Summary
Garth Dawson (1924–2016) was a much-loved and distinguished photographer, who took thousands of photographs across Hyndburn across the decades.
His professional photography career started when asked to join the Accrington Observer as a freelance photographer in 1949. During his time with the Royal Air Force (1942-1945), he had become interested in photography and, on returning home, later worked at the studio of photographer Arthur Constantine, who was also the Accrington Observer photographer.
When he died, Garth was asked to replace him, displaying and selling the Observer photographs in his first shop at Union Road, Oswaldtwistle, and later in his shops at Church Street, Infant Street and Blackburn Road, whilst also working as a wedding photographer.
Garth left the newspaper in 1980 and retired in 1992. He was thankful for having met so many people over the years, and surprised that when out and about, many people greeted him as a long-lost friend
Digital copies of thousands of Garth's images have been very kindly provided by Garth Dawson's family (who also retain the copyright to them). The images have been made available in Red Rose Collections by volunteers as part of the Keeping East Lancashire in the Picture project.
