The cottages on the right, by the river were built for weavers working at Narrowgate Mill. Their date of construction is not known, but is likely to be in the early nineteenth century. The majority had only two rooms and when the mill closed in 1967 they were deemed to be 'sub-standard'. Saved from demolition they have been renovated, the original 10 dwellings being converted into 5 new cottages and are now in occupation. The white building in the distance is Nattow Gates House, (shown as Lower Narrow Gates on the 1894 1:2500 Ordnance Survey map). The licence plate on the car on the left dates the photograph to later than 1977.
