Bolton-by-Bowland: Pudsey's Leap
Bolton by Bowland
William Pudsey, the Squire of Bolton Hall in late 16th Century, started to manufacture silver coins from his lead mine in Rimmington. When messengers came to detain him for his illegal practices, he got on his horse and leapt into the river Ribble from the top of the Rainber Scar (some 90 feet) and escaped. He was eventually captured but obtained a pardon from Queen Elizabeth I. Modern thinking suggests the feat is not possible, and this is really a local legend. The area is now known as Pudsey's leap.
