Miss Butterfield
Burnley's first telephone exchange opened on Hargreaves's Street in 1881. This new form of communication was taken up by about 40 businesses and the local fire brigade. By the early 1920's communication by phone was becoming essential and this new exchange (photographed here in 1953) was set up inside the General Post Office. The chief supervisor at the time the picture was taken was a Miss Butterfield (right hand side - stood up).

By the 1960's automatic telephone exchanges were beginning to take over from the old manual system. A new automatic exchange was built on Brown Street and operations moved there in 1965.
