A photograph looking up Briercliffe Road near to where the junction with Casterton and Eastern Avenue is now located. In the distance to the left one can make out Marsden Sanatorium and New Ground Top.

Most of the surrounding area is farmland. Briercliffe Road ran through this farmland, up to the hamlets of Lane Head and the parish of Briercliffe. The first mill in the area, Rake Head, arrived in c1840. This along with the later arrivals of the Workhouse and the Victoria Hospital helped development of the area and led to the construction of many rows of terraced houses and shops.
