Midland Hotel is a Grade II* listed building.Its Art Deco styled was designed by a British architect Oliver Hill. Built in 1933 on the site of North Western Hotel, which was built in 1847-48, it was renamed the Midland Hotel in 1871, and demolished in 1932.

Eric Ravilious (1903 - 1942) was an English artist, born in Acton, London. He was best known for his watercolours of English landscapes. He served as a war artist, and was lost in action while on a rescue mission off Iceland.
