Burnley
Fred Spofforth
The touring Australian team of 1880 played an 18 man Burnley & district team on 3/4/5 June 1880 at Turf Moor. Unfortunately, as reported at the 1880 AGM the whole season was dogged by bad weather including this game, which was not as successful financially as hoped. A major attraction was the Australian Demon bowler, Fred Spofforth, who had also played in the Australian team which visited Burnley in 1878. He did not disappoint taking 12 wickets in the first innings and 11 in the second. (B/Express 5 &12 June 1880 p 8 & 7) Perhaps the photograph shows him in action? Also shown is the brand new pavilion, which had cost the club a lot more than originally planned, started in 1879, it was ready for the 1880 season and was a big factor in the club being in debt, but the Chairman felt Burnley now had the best ground in the county, with bowls, tennis and football also on offer, the latter being to Rugby rules, but it was felt a change to Association rules would make it more popular. (B/Express 30.10.1880 p 8).
