Opened in August 1886 and built with a capacity for 2,000 the theatre was located on St. James's Street. It remained active until its demolition in 1955. During the war years the theatre became the temporary home of the Old Vic and Sadler's Wells theatre and opera companies, who moved to the town from London to escape the Blitz.
