Philip Gilbert Hamerton, art critic. 10.9.1834 - 4.11.1894. Born near Shaw, as an orphan from the age of 5 he was brought up by family at the Hollins in Burnley. Educated partly at Burnley Gramar School, he took up landscape painting/etching painting local landscapes, before moving to a remote location on Loch Awe to paint.

He married Eugenie Gindriez in 1858 and moved to France where he concentrated on writing about Art, and France. writing many successful books, eventually being honoured by the French Government as an Officer of the Academy. He kept in touch with Burnley Art School and the Mechanics, donating items from his collection. When he visited Burnley in 1882 (Burnley Express 7.11.1894 p6 with full report and obituary) he was given a reception by all the leading literary circle, including Henry Houldsworth, and Tattersall Wilkinson, so this image may date from that time.

He died suddenly at home at Boulogne sur Seine, Paris.
