Demolition of chimney at White Moss Colliery which ceased mining in 1927. Brock's firework factory later occupied part of the site.
The industrial revolution transformed Skelmersdale as coal was essential for manufacturing. In 1871 36% of the population were engaged in farming, by 1851 6% were employed in mining. Up to 1861 the proportion of people involved in farming dropped by 5% while the proportion involved in mining doubled. By 1861 the importance of mining equalled that of farming and by 1871 agricultural workers comprised 8% of the working population while the mines employed 70%.
