Captain Garnett
In order to raise funds for the RNLI, an exhibition took place at the Lowerhouse mill pond. The day was given the title of "Lifeboat Saturday". It consisted of a parade of dignitaries and an exhibition of the lifeboat 'Mary Stanford'. A crowd of 25,000 to 30,000 people had gathered on the banks of the mill pond to witness the event. They saw Captain Garnett and his crew launch the boat into the water, row around the pond a few times and pick up a 'stricken' swimmer. This success of this first Lifeboat Saturday led to it becoming an annual event, although it is unknown when this ceased.
