James Gillfillan
James Gillfillan was a former champion swimmer, born in 1885. He was the holder of the Burnley A.S.C. championship for many years and won many other medals, which he is displaying in this photograph. In 1908 and 1912, he successfully competed in the Olympic trials, but was not selected for the British team. James was also a keen water-polo player and he represented England on a number of occasions.

Mr Gillfillan retired in 1949 from his position of building superintendant to the borough Education Department. He died in 1953, and his funeral took place at St. James's Church in Briercliffe.
