Traction engine
Burnley
There is no information accompanying the photograph other than it was thought to be on Todmorden Rd. There does not seem to be housing nearby, although there is a young boy watching on so perhaps on the outskirts of Burnley. The traction engine can be seen to be hauling a Yates & Thom boiler. Yates and Thom, of Canalside Ironworks Blackburn, were formed in 1890 (previous partnerships having been dissolved) and in 1928 became Foster Yates & Thom. They made boilers and engines, including Lancashire boilers for textile weaving sheds. The Burnley Gazette of 17.2.1906 reports on the official opening of the new Worsthorne Manufacturing Co. Shed, with power supplied by a 30 foot x 7 1/2 foot Yates & Thom boiler. The mill had been in production for several weeks by then. Could this be that boiler, en route to Worsthorne?
