General notes
Postcard shows the night staff nurses from Queen Mary's Military Hospital, Whalley some time during WW1. Ethel Dugdale is pictured back right of the group. The hospital was built as a County Asylum with construction beginning in 1911. It was offered as a military hospital once it had been completed and was originally going to be named 'The Duke of Lancaster's Royal Military Hospital'. It was officially opened on 14th April 1915 and described in the Clitheroe Advertiser as the largest Military Hospital in the kingdom. The name was changed to Queen Mary's Military Hospital because of a mix up. The first military convoy arrived on 6th May 1915 and by the 28th, 300 beds had been installed, of which 251 were already occupied. It later became Calderstones Hospital.
