General notes
George Caygill, born in 1882, son of James & Jane, fought in the Great Boer War (1899-1902), worked as a quarryman at Ding Quarry, Cowpe, until he had an accident in September 1906. Later he became a policeman in Manchester and died in WW1 in France, age 38. He was awarded the Military Medal on 27 Oct 1917. This photo was probably taken prior to World War one, as he wears a Scots Guards "Broderick" peakless forage cap which came into fashion nearer to 1905 than 1917. In April 1915 he was a Constable in Manchester and attestation documents record "Scots Guards - 12 years - time expired" which indicates the photo is earlier as his Service Record shows he did not serve in the Scots Guards in the Great War.
