Whalley Abbey, north western gatehouse
Whalley
The Abbey was founded in 1296 by Cistercian monks who were moving from Stanlaw in Cheshire. Construction continued throughout the 14th century. After the dissolution of the monastries the abbey was bought by Ralph Assheton and the buildings (apart from the church) converted into a manor house. The property now belongs to the Diocese of Blackburn and operates as a retreat and conference centre.
