The distinctive Whalley Viaduct, carrying the Blackburn to Hellifield railway line over the river Calder can be seen in the centre of the photograph. Comprising 48 arches and constructed of brick, it was built between 1846 and 1850, the engineer being Terence Wolfe Flanagan.
