Whalley
What is known locally as the 'Arches' is the railway viaduct. It is a 48 span structure crossing the Calder carrying the railway from Blackburn to Clitheroe. It was built between 1846 and 1850 and was part of the Bolton, Blackburn, Clitheroe and West Yorkshire Railway. It is of red brick, the longest viaduct in Lancashire and is a listed structure. The central arches have impressive decorative chamfering.

This photograph shows the central arch of the viaduct which is the only arch decorated with some fine brickwork. It spans the road into the village from the west passing the Abbey grounds. Through the archway can be seen the North West gateway to the Whalley Abbey. It is 14th Century and formed a principal entrance to the Abbey.
