The houses were constructed prior to the development of the New Town. The Hunter family lived in the detached house. The houses faced Wigan Road, which was the main road through Skelmersdale to Upholland and Wigan. The road is now named Glebe Road and is incorporated into Gillibrands Industrial Estate. The spoil in the foreground is part of the development of that estate. Out of sight behind the photographer was Tawd Farm.
