General notes
This homestead was built by Daniel and Dorothy Barraclough in 1763. Inscribed on a tablet over the door are the arms of the Birtwhistles, a latin inscription meaning, "Let glory be to God on Earth", and the names of the Barracloughs. The motto is appropriate, for the Birtwhistles were strong adherents of the Roman faith. The tablet would be brought from Huncoat Hall when the original hall was demolished, to make way for the present farmhouse. Daniel Barraclough, a gentleman of Burnley, married Dorothy Birtwhistle, daughter of Oliver, the last of the family to own Huncoat Hall. This building became known as The Hall, on the rebuilding of Huncoat Hall.
