General notes
The area at the junction of Noggarth Road and Wheatley Lane Road was known as Field Top. Field Top Mill (also known as Fence Mill) was built in 1834 for William Mitchell, who was bankrupt by 1856. At first it was a worsted mill but in 1859 was rebuilt as a four storey spinning mill. From 1871 it ws run by James Stuttard of Sabden. In 1894 the mill stopped due to a breakage of the main shaft and demolition began in 1898. The warehouses were retained and the site later occupied by Holgates joinery. The stones from the mill were used to build the big wall on Noggarth Road.
