General notes

St. John's Church was consecrated on the 29th July 1794. Previous places of worship had been located in the area, dating as far back as 1540.

The church is very strongly linked to the local Whittaker family. They had their own private footpath to the church constructed and later a small chapel was built inside to honour them. The church bell is inscribed with the name 'Thomas de Whittaker 1747', and his name is also inscribed on to the clock face.
