General notes
This old homestead is now the golf house for Baxenden Golf Club. Formerly there were two cottages which were erected in the 18th Century. These are mentioned in documents for the year 1796. The late Thomas Kenyon, an old Woodnook worthy, lived in one of them as a boy. The name is significant and carries us back to the days when the forest of Accrington was in existance. Situated above the Laund, on the crest of the hill nearby, what is now Gallows Hall would be the gallows of the forest. Here anyone tampering with the deer, would be given short shrift when caught and would be hung on the gallows as a warning. In support of this, human remains have been found in the vicinity.
