In the 1840's, George Slater, who owned Sandygate Mill on Trafalgar Street, employed James Wiseman to construct some housing for his workers. In total, eleven houses were built over the top of a cotton warehouse and overlooking the canal. They had four rooms (two-up, two-down), a lean-to extension and back yards. They were accessed from the walkway (seen here) that connected to Sandygate road. They were used for housing for workers until 1900, when they converted into part of the mill.
