General notes
Every Saturday morning between April and September, the Rag and Bone man would travel out from Blackpool around the Fylde and Kirkham, collecting and recycling unwanted items such as scrap metal, clothes, wood etc . His day job was driving the same horse and his landau up and down Blackpool Promenade giving rides to the holiday makers. Prior to the arrival of Saturday morning television, all the children in the street would listen out intently for his cries of “Rag, Bone, any old Lumber?” and the steady clip clop of his horses hooves on the road outside. Hearing his shouts and grabbing a crust of bread from my Mum, I would run outside hopefully before he had passed our house.. He would always stop and let me feed his horse and then, if not too many children already on board, would help me onto the cart for a free ride down the street. Sitting amongst all the rags which he had already collected and smelling the horse as it walked its way slowly down Fylde St I felt like the “ King of the Castle”. Looking back we only rode a few hundred yards in total but to me it felt I had ridden for miles. Off I would jump as it reached Orders Lane, thanking the man as I did so and ran back up Fylde St and home to Mum. My Dad was always very happy when the Rag and Bone Man visited because there was always the chance of some free manure for his beloved roses. (Which naturally he sent me to collect from the street.)
