St. Andrew's Burnley Cricket Field and Bowling Green 1929

This photo marks the demise of the portion of land used for bowling. The land had previously been part of the Thursby Estate, but now belonged to the Corporation Improvement Committee who were taking the land at the end of November to construct a section of arterial road 3 . St. Andrew's has a long history. The cricket team originated in about 1877 and became the cricket and bowling club in 1888. The cricket club survived until 1935, when it was taken over by the corporation. The pavilion from which the photo was taken was demolished sometime in the 1970s. The bowling club is still in existence today, and is located in newer premises on Abinger Street. See also Image 266930.
