Records dating back to 1311 show a residence located at Bank Hall. The oldest section of the building pictured here, dates from 1790, although like many halls in the area it was gradually added to and altered over time. The hall owners of the hall at this time were the Hargreaves family. They made vast amounts of money from the coal deposits that were located under the surrounding land. This helped to finance the development of the hall and its gardens (which later became Thompson Park).

One of the hall's most famous residents was Captain James Yorke Scarlett, hero of the battle of Balaclava. He had married Charlotte Anne Hargreaves. However, the family had no children, so in 1888 the hall was passed to Charlotte's nephew, Sir John Thursby.

When the Thursby family left the hall in 1901 it remained vacant for a number of years before it was sold to Burnley Corporation in 1913. It was used as a military hospital during WWI and later became the town's maternity hospital. When a new maternity unit was built at the general hospital, Bank Hall became a nursing home. However, due to the subsidence caused by the mining of the area, the main body of the hall had become unstable and it subsequently demolished in 1993.
