A view down Mill Street showing Lowerhouse Mill and the top of Wellesley and Fox Street. These were previously called Wellington Terrace and Peel Terrace.

The mill was built in c1836 by local industrialists, the Dugdale brothers. The family dominated the area, constructing a number of facilities for the local residents and mill workers. The mill prospered until the depression in the late 1920's. The business was placed into receivership and was later taken over by the Lancashire Cotton Corporation. They had little success in reviving the mill and it closed for good in 1933, before demolition began three years later.
