The locomotive is number 4472 'Flying Scotsman', fully restored and obviously on a steam special after it had become a preserved loco. These trips took place from around 1964 onwards. In the photograph it is running with two tenders. This was characteristic of its running in the late 1960s, when steam locomotives had been withdrawn and there were no longer watering facilities at stations, so with two tenders they were able to carry more water with the locomotive. This idea was not carried on after the 'Return to Steam' started to allow other restored locomotives back on to the main line from 1971. For a time prior to this period, the 'Flying Scotsman' was the only steam locomotive allowed on British mainline railways, and when this came to an end it had an ill-fated visit to America, starting about 1971, in an attempt to earn money there. The photograph probably dates from around this late 1960s period when steam was more or less at an end but before the loco's American visit. It was obviously a special train and we would be interested to hear from anyone who may be able to date this photo more accurately.
