"The loving mind
Might round thy borders many a gracious lay
And many a tale not unheroic find."
This fine old mansion is the home of the Whitaker family - a family that has been settled here since about 1430. It is very notable as having produced a number of eminent men. At the Holme was born, about A.D.1547, the Rev. William Whitaker, D.D., the famous and learned theological controversialist, and who received his early education at the Burnley Grammar School. Queen Elizabeth made him Chancellor of St. Paul's and he was Chaplain to Lord Burleigh, Lord High Treasurer of England. At 31 years of age, he was appointed Master of St. John's College, Cambridge. the electors preferring - as Thomas Fuller quaintly put it - "A golden head to silver hairs"; and speaking of his death Fuller again says, "He died in the 57th year of his age, A.D. 1595; and in St. John's College ... was solemnly interred, with the grief of the University and the whole Church of God." The mother of this eminent divine was Elizabeth Nowell, of Read Hall, and sister of Alexander Nowell, D.D., Dean of St. Paul's, and of Laurence Nowell, Dean of Litchfield. Here too at Holme were written these histories of Whalley, of Craven, and of Richmondshire, by Dr. T. D. Whitaker. Of this last writer "The Book of Days" says, "Mr. Whitaker is celebrated for having founded a new school of topographical literature, or rather, we may say, revived an an ancient one that had been allowed to become extinct." The house above pictured was partly rebuilt in the year A.D. (?)603 and the West end - which had remained of wood - was rebuilt in A.D. 1717.
