General notes

The original hall was a half timbered building, erected about 1490. It is supposed that it was then the residence of the mortuary collector of Whalley Abbey. In the 16th century it was the home of the Morten family, and latter it was owned by the Nowells of Read, who sold it in 1772, to a Mr Hilton. In 1799 it was sold again to James Taylor, from whom it descended to Miss Pilling Taylor and Sir Henry Worsley Taylor, Bart. It was built after the designs by George Webster of Kendal who was also the architect for Read Hall in 1829.
