General notes
Here we have the one time residence of the Asshetons, the Abbots house, erected by Abbot Paslew. Built round a small court, the north and east sides, dating back to the 16th century. The south west angle is the ruined Abbots kitchen, with its two great fireplaces and the infirmary buildings of the monastery of the 15th century. The most interesting feature of the north front is the original doorway of the house on the ground floor, just behind the stone staircase. The east front of the residence presents the appearance of a Tudor mansion with its mullioned and transomed windows. The picturesque ruin of the Abbots Oratory, with its beautiful tracery window and the ivied buttress built by Sir Ralph Assheton in 1694, all add to this beautiful home, the scene of many incidents in history and romance Assheton's have figured very prominently in the history of Whalley.
