General notes
The interior of Haywood's School. Haywood's School was established in 1856. First opposite the Town Hall at the corner of St James' Street, Accrington. There, very many of Accrington's leading citizens were trained, as boys and girls, many of whom have risen to high distinction. The schoolmaster was the late Alderman FN Haywood JP who was Mayor of the Borough twice, and who occupied a leading position in the town as Chairman of the Gas Board for many years. He died at Blackpool in 1905. The old schoolroom in Stanley Street, with its old well used desks, is now a thing of the past well remembered and respected by many of the older people of Accrington and District. The building later became the Dyers and Finishers Club. See also Stone C "The Development of Education in Accrington 1790-1903 L370 94272L4"
