General notes
An Illustrated image of the railway viaduct in the London news 1848.
Over the King Street arch is the date Nov 1847 and initials of the manager R.H.M.
It was completed in 1848 and the railway line was opened in Burnley in September of that year.
Immediately on leaving Accrington, the rails to Burnley run over a fine series of 21 curved arches which extend from the station to Whalley Road. These arches are forty feet span, each sixty feet in height from the level of the river water to the rails, and have a curve of forty chains, a very fine engineering feat, and a remarkable landmark in Accrington.
