General notes
Machpelah burial ground with the gas works in the background, or the Baptists in Gas House lane as it was once known.

In 1765 the local Baptists decided to remove their place of worship from Oakenshaw in Clayton-Le-Moors and built Machpelah Baptist Chapel. Seventy years later a new Chapel was built in Blackburn Road, near the railway viaduct, and in 1874 services were transferred to Cannon Street when the new chapel was built there.

Hyndburn Road was once spoken of as 'Hellhome' or 'Th' Ellholme' and was also known as Hagg Lane.
