General notes
The Hippodrome was a wood and corrugated iron building on the site on Ellison's Tenement previously used as winter quarters for a touring circus in 1896/7. Miss Ella and her Forest Bred Lions with variety support, headed the bill at the opening on the 12th October 1903 and admission charges ranged from 2d (1p) to one shilling (5p in today's money). The Hippodrome was burned down on the 26th June 1908 and was replaced by the New Hippodrome Theatre, seating 1600 persons, which opened on the 21st December 1906 with Charles T. Aldrich, a quick change artist, at the top of the bill.
