General notes
Situated on the ancient highway from Padiham to Haslingden which existed in the 12th Century. This farm would be passed by John Wesley on his way to Haslingden in 1788. Probably the name of the farm has been derived from it's close proximity to the Black Moss, an area of bog land and peat. Here in the late spring the cotton sedge in full flower can be seen, and is the home of the Lapwing and Snipe and other species of the aquatic tribe.
