General notes
The Borough Police Force in 1905
The borough Force had been formed in 1883 with a total of thirty two men, when the population of the town was about 32 000
Note the 'bush' hats - thirty nine of these felt hats, south African type at 3/6 each had been bought by the Accrington police Clothing sub-committee late in 1904
In June of that year the St John's Ambulance Drill Hall had been opened by Major General Baden Powell, the hero of the south African war.
The hats were discontinued when it was found that they were heavier in rainy weather than helmets, which were made of cork
Caption form the Accrington Observer 7 March 1905 reads
2An interesting photograph of members of the Accrington Police Force wearing their new summer uniforms and 'Baden Powell' hats taken at the annual government inspection on Friday last"
