General notes
This is a photograph of the Cannon Street Baptists that was published in an retrospective for the Accrington Observer on May 2nd 1931. The article is included in the physical file for this photograph.
The text reads: "Among the many interesting photographs in the possession of the late Miss Betsy Ann Taylor, for several years infant mistress of Willow-street day school, Accrington, was a group of the senior Sunday school classes connected with Cannon-street Baptist Church, taken on the occasion of a picnic to "Greendale," Downham, about forty years ago. Of the 51 persons included in the group, the majority have passed away, but there are some still living and connected with Cannon-street, and the photograph will be of much interest to hundreds of present-day Accringtonians by reason of past associations.
In the centre of the picture is the figure if the Rev. Chas. Williams, for fifty years pastor at Cannon-street, and on the extreme right is Sir George W. Macalpine, a short sketch of whose career was given by "Old Hand" in last week's "Observer". On the same row are Mr. M. Piat, Mr. George Barlow, Mr. Enoch McKernan, Mr. Christopher Barnes, Mr. Jno. Ashworth, Mr. Thomas Broughton (at one time Mayor of the borough), Mr. Jabez Beckett, formerly Borough Treasurer at Accrington, Mr. W. Wilshaw, Mr. Broderick, and Mr. Thomas Gordon.
Among those standing behind are Messrs. Jas. Wilkinson, F. Barton, Jas. Haworth, Herbert Ashworth, E. Kenyon, Richard Broughton, Rennie Wilson, John Hunt, Richard Spiers, T. Kay, J. W. Heap and W. Pickles.
With one or two exceptions all those whose names are given were Sunday school superintendents or teachers at Willow-street and many of them could lay claim to service extending over half a century.
It is not quite so easy to identify the ladies in the group, and the names of a few must unfortunately be omitted on this account. In some cases, too, it is not possible to give the married names, nearly all of them were single when the photograph was taken. Amongst those seated on the bottom row are Miss V. Hargreaves, Miss Sarah Barlow, Miss I. Smith, Miss Nuttall, Miss Taylor, Miss E. Broadley (now Mrs W. Wilkinson), Miss Hey (whose brother was the pastor at Ernest-street for some years), Miss Broughton (later Mrs. M. L. Stanesby), Miss Nuttall, Miss Cottam, who died a few weeks ago, Miss Smith (now Mrs. J. H. Kay), and Miss Dickinson (Mrs. F. Barton). In the row above are Miss C. Jackson, Miss M. Holding, Miss Anson, Mrs. T. Eltoft, Mrs. Jas. Bury, Miss Barlow, Miss Emily Brooks, Miss B. A. Taylor, Miss A. Anson, Mrs. Jno. Entwistle (Queen's-road), Miss Lizzie Smith (Mrs. Jno. Barlow), Miss Jackson and Miss Smith.
