General notes
The old court house (dated 1835) and former magistrates clerks' office, known as Bannister's office (after Henry Bannister, deputy magistrate's clerk, who died in 1874). The Police Court was held here; there were cells in the basement. The building was also used by the Accrington Local Board, who held their first meeting here in 1853. It was also used by Congregationalists, Unitarians, the Catholic Apostolic Church and Spiritualists.
The magistrates clerks' office premises were built by the Hargreaves family of Broad Oak and was architecturally similar to Bank Terrace on the opposite side of the road. At the time the photograph was taken, it was E. Ellison's confectioner's shop. All this property was demolished in 1931.
