General notes
Ophicleide made by Henry Smith (ca. 1818-1884) of Wolverhampton.

The photograph is inscribed on the back as follows: "Mr Ashton, I borrowed an Ophicleide from some friends of mine some years ago and after a 'clean-up' I had it photographed. This one was made by Henry Smith of Wolverhampton in late 18th or early 19th century. It is still 'playable.'" A note on the file copy states "see correspondence re Adam Westwell and Geo. Ellis."
