General notes
Great Hameldon, the highest altitude in this neighbourhood is 1343 feet above sea level (the name means top of the mountain) a Celtic derivation. This view shows the lonely isolation of this homestead, it seems as though it has grown out of its dreary surroundings, a part of the landscape as it were. Here, our sturdy yeomen, hardened tillers of the soil, lived in a sense of security. The Arley mine coal seam crops out of the face of the hill. Hameldon Hall is of simple 18th century construction, and is a farmhouse. Mary Hoyle well is on the right, now fallen into decay. Here was held Mary Hoyle well fair on the first Sunday in May, now no longer.
