General notes
As one makes the approach to Moleside, past the works of Plantation Mill, or up by the side of the Coppice, attention is arrested by the name of Slate Pits, nestling under the protection of the hillside, with trees in the background. This touch of sylvan scenery qualifies the scene as picturesque, both in summer and when snow lies deep in winter. The building is of the 17th Century, with 18th Century and modern additions. The name is derived from the quarries, where thin slabs of stone were obtained for roofing. In the beginning, it was a part of the High Riley estate, and in 1608, and for some time later, the Hargreaves family lived here. For a long period it was the home of a branch of the Hackings, and also of the Riley family.
