General notes
Old High Riley. For over 500 years, this was the home of the Riley family. And which, during the course of
its history, was rebuilt no fewer than four times. The present building (the oldest dated in Accrington) was erected in 1628. Since then, the building has been converted into cottages. The earliest documentary evidence, in regard to the homestead, is in the year 1241, in connection with the Kirkstall Abbey possessions. It is also mentioned in the De-Lacey accounts, in 1297 and 1306: High Riley, a vaccary of the forest of Accrington, with Robert Riley as steward of Accrington. During the 17th Century, the Lonsdale family acquired the house. And in the 18th Century it passed to the Aspinalls of Standen, through marriage with the Lonsdales, and it remained with them until purchased by the Hargreaves family of Broad Oak in the 19th Century.
