General notes
The view shows the collapse of William Shutt's shoe shop, at the time of the demolition of the adjoining property for Bridges corner block. On Sunday June 2nd 1889 Accrington was visited by a great storm, in about three hours there was rainfall of one and a half inches, factories and roads were flooded and thousands of panes of glass smashed. On entering his shop the following morning Mr Shutt heard the crash of timber, immediately on leaving the premises the gable end fell with a terrible crash bringing with it the roof and a portion of the first floor and completely wrecking the bedroom. The windows in the shop were shattered and timbers broken to matchwood. The damaged building was estimated at about £700, the property belonged to Mr Hodgson of Great Harwood
