This house was built by Dr John Arkwright, from whom it was purchased by Alderman James Barlow, JP., second mayor of Accrington. He was the father of Lady MacAlpine of Broad Oak House. The site was later occupied by the furnishing and jewellery department of the Accrington and Church Industrial Co-operative Society.
