General notes
Image shows the nearly finished New Albion Pub, on Rossendale Rd. with new council housing also visible. It later became "The Running Pump", and then the Usha Restaurant. Adjacent is the old Plane Tree beerhouse. The Burnley Express of 16.12.39 reported on the final transfer of the licence, from the original Albion on Red Lion Street, Burnley, to the New Albion and that Massey's would close the Plane Tree at end of licensing hours on Sunday and open the New Albion the next day Monday 18th Dec. 1939. The new publican who would benefit from the superb living quarters was Arthur Fryer. The report of the official opening on 20th December 1939 says Massey's were now planning to demolish the Plane Tree and create a garden to enhance the exterior of the New Albion. Architects were named as Hitchon and Pickup.
