General notes
The Royal Oak was originally an imposing private house, but had been a public house for 80 years when it was closed in 1931. The name of the licensee Holdsworth, can be made out over the front door. The image is dated to 1929 at about the time when the Corporation were buying up property in this area, to facilitate the widening of St. James's St. and enable improvement of the town centre. Located at the junction of St. James's St. and Curzon St., this became the site of Marks and Spencer's store.
