Army Remount Depot established during 1914-18 war in the grounds of Lathom House.600 men worked on the construction and the depot accommodated 7000 horses with 2000 grooms. There were over 100 stables, huts and ancillary buildings made of corrugated steel. Hence the nickname of 'tin city'. The depot with 10 miles of water pipe and an electricity supply cost £60,000. Among the first contingent of grooms to arrive were from the Duke of Westminster's estate Eaton Hall. Rough riders were responsible for breaking the horses which were drawn from farms and estates. 900 came from Canada. The depot had its own post office, concerts and dances. A railway was built which left the Earl of Lathom's land near Blaguegate Colliery, passed Slate Farm and passed through Spa Farm to reach the main railway line. The depot remained in use until 1920 with the railway line used for storage. The lines were later removed. It was estimated that during the Great War over 250,000 horses and mules passed through the depot.
